WEP: The Box of Jewels

“I think…I’ve hit something,” said one of the men wiping the sweat from his brow. Two others helped him scatter away the sand and uncovered a box. “Oh look, someone’s hidden their treasure and forgotten about it,” said another with mild sarcasm. He cleared his throat again and looked around at the bunch of weary men.

He stepped up to open the trunk overhearing the guy who found the trunk whisper to his friend nearby, “I think we should start digging for that well elsewhere.” The trunk contained glass bottles of clear liquid. He opened one, sniffed suspiciously, then took a sip. He smiled as he handed the bottle to those around.

In the middle of the hot Saraha, a drop of water was the only jewel.

Water is a highly valuable jewel – one that we often take for granted. Good, clean water is truly priceless on a hot day or in an arid place, or even in a place without the infrastructure to bring clean water to people who need it most.

Yup. It’s only when you’re really thirsty that you realise you really need (& miss) it.

The way humans are behaving, clean water will be rarer than gemstones soon. Probably cost as much too. Great flash!

  12. Hi Bernadette – what a wonderful take on the prompt … and so so true – water is a necessity of life – we wouldn’t be here without it … and thus is so so precious. Now my comment is longer than your post!! Congratulations – cheers Hilary

  16. This reminds me of the Twilight Zone episode where a gold thief puts himself into suspended animation. When he wakes up 150 years later he finds himself without water. He tries to pay a fellow to take him to the nearest town using gold bars. He then dies.
The man from the future remarks to his wife that the poor man must have been delirious, trying to pay him with gold, a substance that has been worthless since shortly after the robbery was committed.
Without water, we’d all be goners to be sure.

  17. A great, quick take on the prompt, Bravo. My own entry is late due to the tragedy that birthed the tale I wrote, names changed to protect the guilty: https://rolandyeomans.blogspot.com/2019/04/weprif.html

  20. Water is indeed one of the most precious jewels of all in a desert! I took ill with dehydration in the Negev in 2005, and understand the importance of this liquid so many take for granted.

  22. Short and effective. Water is life or death in a dry desert. I thought the liquid which must have been stagnant still was going to be a magic brew. Well done.
