Update

His fingers drummed a rhythm as he stared at the screen.

She glanced at him in concern, “is it done? Our regulars are lining up and getting impatient. If this keeps up, they’ll soon start cancelling their breakfast subscriptions.”

“Not yet. It’s still stuck at 20 minutes for the update to complete installation.”

Dedicated to Windows’ constant annoying updates. (If anyone knows how to permanently opt out of them, will gladly accept the advice).

The photo prompt has been given by David Stewart at the Friday Fictioneers hosted by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields and the word prompt (Rhythm) has been given by Denise Farley for the Six Sentence Stories on Girlie on the Edge.

  1. Hey there, in case you were seriously inquiring about the Windows updates:
Control Panel / System Security / Windows Update / Change settings.

    1. I’ve tried that but after a point it either gives me ‘update & shut down or ‘update & restart’ options 😦

  3. Yup, been there. It was, at least, worse when you had to wait for updates from the scriptorium for your illuminated manuscript

  4. I wish I knew how to opt out of those windows updates as well. I am thinking of getting a Linux machine next time. Nice blending of those two prompts. I am still trying to figure out what to write for Friday Fictioneers.

    1. I considered Linux too but couldn’t find a reasonably priced laptop with the OS. Do they even support Microsoft Office?

      1. They are expensive. I have been using LibreOffice which seems like a good substitute for Microsoft Office at least for my uses.

  6. You’ve highlighted one of my pet hates. And when the update completes, nothing seems to have changed!

    1. Have a look at your Task Manager? It’ll slow down or overheat with too many programs.

  10. Ah (… or should that be Arrgghhh!) , those pesky updates. They seem to even update when you pause the updates, and the updates update themselves at times.

  11. The price we pay for being connected.I can’t say I’ve experienced this update frenzy in quite the same way as you and other commenters describe. Is that because I use a Mac? Good story. We’re at the mercy of our technology in one way or another.

    1. Probably. I used a MacBook Air for work for a year & could simply dismiss the updates notification. With Windows you can only dismiss it for a short period of time before it forcibly updates.
But you’re right about being at the mercy of our technology.

These updates get on nerves. Sometimes it’s on auto-update and you have no choice but to go through with it! The frustration is real!

    1. Ikr! I’ve kept the auto update on mine off but it still ends up updating.
