ISWG: There’s No Place Like Home

It’s ISWG day today. Every month a question is posted for insecure writers and this time it’s:

If you could pick one place in the world to sit and write your next story, where would it be and why?

My Answer:

Home. As much as I’d like to travel the world and live the life of a digital nomad, I’d probably end up spending ALL my time exploring a new place instead of writing.

Currently Reading:

I’m still midway through ‘Tell Tale’ by Jeffrey Archer and have also started ‘SOLO – Survival Guide for Creative Freelancers’ by Palle Schmidt.

Last Month:

August was a little busier than usual. I posted my first ISWG post, participated in the WEP and took part in a short story contest!

A Quick Question:

What’s the best way of sustaining a plot for a short story (beginning, middle, end) without it feeling stretched?

  1. Hi,
It was nice having you participate in the WEP. Keep at it.
I can identify with staying at home. I am so dang curious that when I travel I don’t even think about writing.
    Wishing you all the best.

  2. Thanks for stopping by my blog.
You’re right, there’s no place like home.
I look at short stories as parts of larger stories that stand alone and represent the essence of the overall message. When I write one, I treat it like a book chapter but with a clear intro, climax, and sense of closure. Not sure if that helps at all, I’m a bit of an odd writer.

    1. Thanks Toi 🙂 It sure does.
Do you think that a mini novel — the size of a short story (with pieces of flash fiction) work?

  3. Glad you’re part of the IWSG. I don’t have much experience with short stories, but make sure the protagonist has plenty of obstacles in his/her way and I think you’ll be fine. Oh, and a big twist in the middle, too,.

  4. Writing at home definitely has its advantages! I’m not good with short stories, so I don’t have any advice there. Still trying to figure it out myself!

  5. I’m a homebody too. If I could get some Star Trek tech to beam me to places I’d like to visit, I’d be all in though! 🙂

    1. I quite agree. Though I’d prefer a TARDIS for this.

  6. True, new places one would want to explore. Home we already know.

    1. Yup. The only place I tend to explore at home is the fridge.

  7. I’m also a homebody. Because I’m easily distracted, I would definitely explore more than write if I were anywhere else. I write short stories and agree with what Ken said about having obstacles in the protagonist’s way. Also, you need to have a pretty solid plot. Welcome to the group, it’s nice to meet you!

  8. I write best at home too. When I have to travel, writing is often put on the sideline.

  9. Home was a favorite pick. Everything one needs is right there.

  10. I’m very late commenting as I’ve finished NaNo and faced my IWSG backlog – from the comfort of my wheelchair-office-home where I get inspired to write.
