The Glow of Love

He sat on the tree stump with a sigh. Today was Mother’s Day and he had nothing to gift her like most of the boys in his class who bought dresses, chocolates and candles for their moms. His pocket money was just enough to pay for his bus fare to school and that favourite lollipop. Rising prices were such a nuisance; on top of that, his father had lost his job as there was no more timber to be cut and hence couldn’t raise his pocket money like others.

He heard someone coming and looked up, it was his best friend and man-friday holding a jar. He held it up, quickly whispered in his friend’s ear and then both got to work scooping up sunlight into the jar. As dusk approached they also caught some fireflies before going home.

That night, one house glowed brightly even as the electricity was cut.

  6. Very sweet and heartfelt tale. I remember receiving coupons for hugs and clean rooms and smiles and love for some Mother’s Day gifts from my sweet children. Mothers want the love, not the dress, chocolate or candles.

  18. You found an excellent way of showing how love and attentive effort in expressing it are better than material gifts to a mom. And you served it with a side helping of the value of friendship. Great tale, Bernadette!
