It’s true that Goa is famous for its beautiful beaches, but along with the sun, sand and surf, there’s more to the place. Museums in Goa have showcased a rich culture and history of the place since years.
Museum of Goa
Where: Pilerne
Timings: 10:00 am- 6:00 pm
Entry Fee: Adults: Foreigners= Rs. 300, Indians= Rs. 100, Students & Children (Below 18 years)= Rs. 50.
The Museum of Goa (MOG) showcases contemporary art by renowned artists. Its exhibitions consists of varied art forms like painting, photography, sculpture, music, theatre, etc. It also conducts workshops, lectures, talks and other events for people of all ages.
Goa State Museum
Where: Panaji.
Timings: 9:30 am- 5:30 pm (Saturdays & Sundays closed).
Entry Fee: None.
The Goa State Museum is also known as the State Archaeology Museum. The museum consists of various artefacts relating to the history of Goa. These range from religious icons and the history of printing to lottery machines and photographs relating to Goa’s freedom struggle.
Ancestral Goa Museum
Where: Lotoulim
Timings: 9:00 am- 6:00 pm.
Entry Fee: Adults (11+)= Rs. 50, Children (3-10 years)= Rs. 25.
Ancestral Goa Museum is also known as Big Foot Museum (from the myth of a man’s big footprint still existing at the museum). The open air museum showcases an ancient miniature Goan village with life size statues showcasing the daily life and culture of the people, typical Portuguese houses, etc. The place also boasts of the largest laterite sculpture of Sant Mirabai.
Goa Chitra Museum
Where: Benaulim.
Timings: 9:00 am- 6:00 pm.
Entry Fee: None.
The Goa Chitra Museum houses implements used for traditional agriculture and other related trades like carpentry, tailoring, goldsmiths, pottery, etc. The museum also has an organic farm.
Museum of Christian Art
Where: Old Goa.
Timings: 9:30 am- 5:00 pm.
Entry Fee: Adults: Rs. 30, Students: Rs. 10.
The Museum of Christian Art is supposed to be one of its kind in Asia. It contains artefacts showcasing the emergence of Christianity in the state.
Naval Aviation Museum
Where: Bogmalo.
Timings: 10:00 am- 5:00 pm (Mondays closed).
Entry Fee: Rs. 20.
The Naval Aviation Museum is a military museum and is the only Naval Aviation Museum in Asia. It consists of two galleries. The outdoor gallery consists of various aircraft engines and different types of aircraft. The indoor gallery consists of armaments, sensors, safety equipment and pictures or various operations conducted by the Indian Air and Navy Forces.
Goa Science Centre & Planetarium
Where: Panaji.
Timings: 10:00 am- 6:00 pm.
Entry Fee: Science Centre= Rs. 15, Planetarium Show= Rs. 25, 3D Fantasy Show= Rs. 20.
The Goa Science Centre is known for its interactive exhibits relating to science and astronomy. The planetarium hosts four shows in a day. The centre also hosts various talks, lectures, programs, seminars and (science related) film screenings.
